Unit 1: Numerical Expressions and Factors

Unit Learning Outcomes

  • Students will review their their previous knowledge on the number system.
  • Students will learn to perform mathematical operations using exponents.
  • Students will learn and apply orders of operations.
  • Students will review LCM and GCF concepts.

Unit Biblical Integration Goals

  • Students will discuss and discover how intricately Math and Bible are related.
  • Students will understand the importance of working together in math class from a biblical perspective - Hebrews 10:24-25.
  • Students will discuss what it means to do their math work as if working for the Lord - Colossians 3:23.

Unit Standards

  • 6.NS.2 - Fluently divide multi digit numbers using standard algorithm.
  • 6.NS.4 - Find the greatest common factor of two whole numbers less than or equal to 100 and the least common multiple of two whole numbers less than or equal to 12. Use the distributive property to express a sum of two whole numbers 1–100 with a common factor as a multiple of a sum of two whole numbers with no common factor.

Objectives:

  • Students will get to know each other and the instructor by playing a game.
  • Students will learn how math is embedded everywhere in nature.
  • Students be gauged on their readiness to take Pre Algebra/Algebra course.
  • Students will take an Initial Knowledge Assessment on Aleks website
  • Students will finish a course readiness assignment on Aleks

Classroom Activities:
  1. Prayer and Devotions.
  2. Please walk around the classroom, gather the following information from three of your classmates.
    1. Their name
    2. Hobbies
    3. If they had one wish what would that be?
  3. Now, let us discuss your findings and get to know about each other.
  4. Please watch the following video Please reflect on it on Showbie. (Class code: RCGZY). Your reflection should contain:
    1. The summary of the video
    2. What is the most striking aspect of the video
    3. Did the video change your perception of math and numbers. Explain your answer.
  5. Now, please sit in your assigned places and have nothing but a scratch paper, pencil and iPads on your desks.
  6. Please log on to Apple Classroom.
  7. Please listen to the instructions carefully. Following instructions will help you do your best in the assessment.
  8. Please work on the prior knowledge check. (If you haven't worked on it already)
  9. Please take the course readiness assignment. Stay relaxed and focussed. Please time yourself well. Follow the instructions on Aleks. This assignment is just to gauge your knowledge to help me help your better. Just do your best. Don't sweat.
  10. Students who finish early may quietly work on This Riddle to hone their problem solving skills.
