American Literature

American Literature, a college preparatory course for 11th and 12th grade students, explores the development, progression, and variation of American ideals and viewpoints through the study of both American foundational documents and literature from 1607 to the present. One of the main overarching goals in this class is to provide students with diverse literature and voices, therefore broadening their perspective on what has so long deemed America as the "melting pot."  Students will read a variety of text types ranging from historical documents, current event articles, and essays, to  memoirs, poetry, and fictional novels.  Over the course of this class students will focus on writing in various forms--personal reflection and connection journals; short and long literary analysis essays; personal narratives; and argumentative writing,  with the hopes to sharpen their ability to utilize the written word.

Additional Expectations: The workload and expectations are intended to prepare students for college application essays, college-level analysis, and college writing.

Note: Juniors and seniors may choose between American Literature, African American Literature, British Literature, Screenwriting, and Philosophy in Literature. The courses are comparable in work and requirements. If juniors wish to join the AP track, they select AP Language & Composition, followed by AP Literature & Composition their senior year if they remain in Advanced Placement classes.
