      The English summer reading assignments listed below will help prepare you for the upcoming year.


      These books have been selected not only for their academic value but also because they discuss interesting and important ideas and will foster engaging discussions when we return to school next year. All summer reading should be completed by the first day of school. Students can expect a formal assessment of their reading comprehension on their first day of class.
      Summer reading is required for all honors and AP English courses for grades 10-12. Students may purchase any version of the texts below.

      Honors English 10

      Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury
      • Students must purchase a non-digital copy of this book for use in class (ISBN 978-1451673319) AND they must complete this summer homework assignment and bring it to the first day of class.
    • Honors 10: Harold Bloom - Background to Fahrenheit 451 File

      • Read this introduction to Fahrenheit 451 before reading the novel.

      Read Harold Bloom's introduction to Fahrenheit 451. Then complete the summer reading assignment. This summer reading assignment is meant to be a preview of the kind of critical work we will do this year. The assignment is also an opportunity for your teacher to see a sample of your analytical skills.

       You should be prepared to submit a printed hardcopy of this assignment on the first day of class. We will also have a reading quiz on Fahrenheit within the first few days of school.

      • The Norton Reader, "16th High School Edition": purchase a new, print version of this text. Annotations will be graded throughout the year; used textbooks with prior annotations will not be accepted.
